RGB provided A/E professional services for the replacement of the substandard emergency department at the Providence VA Medical Center. RGB designed for the construction of a new single-story building addition located at 830 Chalkstone Avenue. The project provided 21,900 BGSF that is located below the new ICU addition and approximately 1,000 SF of renovated space.
The new state-of-the-art facility was designed to meet the current standards and future needs of the Providence VA Medical Center’s veterans.
The new emergency department offers space to collocate an X-ray room, CT room, control rooms, waiting area, and a DIS office to support the emergency department as well as a holding cell for the Veterans Affairs’ police. It also is equipped with 14 private treatment rooms inclusive of fast-track rooms, isolation rooms, women veteran’s rooms, low stimulus rooms for emergency mental health, life support unit and a security examination/treatment room.
Other features include new pneumatic transport system, separate ambulance entrance with access for two ambulances, electrical upgrade, two three-stop elevators to access the ICU, Building 1 first floor and the basement, relocation of existing utilities, redesign of roadway and parking for new traffic flow, emergency department dropoff area and new landscaping around the building addition including adequate walkways.
Lastly, a separate corridor was included to the north providing access to the lower elevator lobby for patients visiting the second floor hermodialysis clinic. The new emergency department addition HVAC coverage consisted of the southwest A-wing basement as well.
