RIPTA Chafee Maintenance Facility

RGB was retained by Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority (RIPTA) to design a $20 million, 95,000 square foot expansion of the Providence transit maintenance facility. The site was once an old trolley barn. The building represented the first facility of its type in the New England area in using Compressed Natural Gas. The existing trolley barn aesthetic was retained by preserving various elevation elements. Original granite cornices were salvaged and relocated. As a result, the building design complements the character of the historic neighborhood.
