RI State Police Public Safety Complex
RGB has designed the new, 56,000 SF Rhode Island State Police Headquarters and RI E 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System Facility, to LEED Silver Certification. This state-of-the-art facility consolidates the RI State Police main headquarters and two operational barracks, in addition to supporting office departments such as the Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU), Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI), and Patrol, Detective & Administrative Bureaus. An added major component to the project is the inclusion of the RI E 9-1-1 Emergency Telephone System new main headquarters. In addition to a press and conference center and holding and processing center.
The RGB team included the nationally recognized law enforcement expert, SCHRADERGROUP architecture, LLC.
RGB was retained to design, develop plans, construction documents, and bid specifications to restore three existing former military buildings at Fort Wetherill State Park in Jamestown, RI, to create an Aquatic Resource Center. These restored facilities accommodate the consolidation of the Marine Fisheries Section of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management’s (RIDEM) Division of Fish and Wildlife.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, RGB created a detailed restoration plan which maximized the existing building space without destroying the historical, cultural or military significance of the site, or the exterior and interior features of the buildings.
The $4.2 million project was completed in 2002 and includes a wetlab capable of circulating 200 gallons of seawater per minute, office space, research laboratories, improved public access to the waterfront, and a foot trail connecting the parcel to the park.
Barrington Public Safety Building
RGB was commissioned to design a new 37,000 SF consolidated police and fire safety complex, that would service a 35 person police force and a 20 person fire department.
This $6 million project included an eight bay fire station, four general holding cells and one juvenile detention cell, sleeping quarters to accommodate eight, a two-story lobby, shooting range design and a central dispatch for police and fire. RGB also assisted the Town with public presentation for a successful bond referendum.
Old RI State House
RGB was commission to provide restoration and rehabilitation to the Governor's Conference Room within the 1900 McKim, Mead and White Period structure. The room was converted to a Conference and Media Center with new color and lighting schemes. Work included utilization of State owned antiques, historic paint color analysis and structural analysis of fire proof terra cotta ceiling. Paint work included building and custom color matching for the ceiling ornamentation. Lighting included restoration of original cut glass gassolier and core drilling through ceiling structure to install concealed lighting.
Little Compton Public Safety Building
This $2 million facility consolidates fire, emergency response, and police services under one roof. This 14,000 SF modern building replaces two existing facilities that had become outdated and inadequate. The building program accommodates the specific needs of each group, while fostering a sense of camaraderie among the personnel.
Some shared amenities include camera surveillance throughout, men’s and women’s locker rooms, a kitchen area, accommodations to sleep 4 and secure storage space.
Police services has a state-of-the-art dispatch room, one-car secure entry. evidence and processing rooms, a booking area with an interview room, two holding cells, private and open offices, and a muster room for daily meetings.
Knowing that the new building would be set in the historically-sensitive rural environment of Little Compton, RGB took great care to be sure that its design complemented the surrounding architecture.
Narragansett Public Safety Building
RGB has been commissioned to design a new public safety facility for the Town of Narragansett. The $15 million facility was designed to complement the surrounding neighborhood.
The 40,000 SF new police and fire headquarters includes a new emergency operations center, community and training room, and an expanded fire apparatus floor with four truck bays.
Smithfield Fire Station
RGB designed this proposed $4.8 million fire station for the Town of Smithfield to aid in the Town’s effort at gaining bond approval and support. The station replaces a circa 1930’s station which has been overcrowded and in need of repair. The proposed station will be 12,000 SF, have drive-thru bays and an emergency 911 center. RGB has also assisted the Department in programming and cost analysis.
Licht Judicial Complex
Built in two phases (1924 and 1932), the Licht Judicial Complex manages to blend its 16 stories very effectively among the two- and three-story Colonial and Victorian structures on Providence’s historic east side.
Because the courthouse had suffered from a lack of maintenance virtually since its completion, RGB’s work over four phases included complete exterior and interior restoration.
The $16.5 million project included structural repairs, a new slate roof, new wood thermal windows (660 openings; 2,900 sashes), upgraded elevators, two new courtrooms, new egress stairs. signage systems and ADA compliance.
“The historic importance of the architecture was keenly understood by your historic preservation architect, who oversaw the smallest detail of the restoration...the project received the care and attention to detail so important to a building of such historic significance….” ~James M. Allam, Former Executive Director Rhode Island Public Buildings Authority
RI Adult Correctional Institute
The Medium Security ACI was constructed on a site within the existing correctional complex. RGB, in association with the Voinovich Companies, completed this $73 million project in phases.
The 316,037 SF facility houses 600 inmates within six housing modules. RGB provided architectural services for upgraded security, visitation, segregation, administration, and gatehouse maintenance. RGB also designed laundry, education, cafeteria, industry and autobody, greenhouse, recreational facilities, medical facilities including a six-bed unit, observation and isolation section, phlebotomy unit, exam rooms, dental offices, and laboratories and x-ray areas.
Garrahy Judicial Complex
RGB’s design provided new facilities for the Family Court, Sixth District Court, and Workers’ Compensation Commission, located in the J. Joseph Garrahy Judicial Complex.
The 200,197 SF building has public circulation, waiting areas, courtrooms of various sizes, ancillary spaces, office spaces, and holding cells to accommodate 80.
